City of Los Alamitos E-bike Ordinance

Like many other cities in Orange County, Los Alamitos has experienced a notable increase in the number of electric bicycles in the community. Both law enforcement and residents have encountered significant safety concerns related to E-bike use. A recent Orange County Grand Jury investigation highlighted an urgent need for consistent ordinances to regulate and enforce safe E-bike practices across cities, school districts, parks, and unincorporated areas.

The Los Alamitos Police Department is pleased to announce the implementation of new municipal codes relating to the safety and use of E-Bikes in the City. This is in response to the ongoing concerns of residents and visitors, as well as the mandate from the Orange County Grand Jury.

The purpose and scope of the new municipal codes are to provide guidance and to increase safety for E-Bike users, pedestrians, and vehicular traffic.

Examples of the new municipal codes include but are not limited to, enforcement actions related to operating in an unsafe manner, obeying traffic laws, using a helmet for riders under the age of 18, and an explanation of each classification of E-Bike.

Currently, students who operate these vehicles must attend an E-Bike safety course hosted by the Los Alamitos Police Department before the Los Alamitos School District allows them to park their E-Bikes on the school campus. Once successfully completed, a sticker from the Police Department will be provided to the students, which is valid for two years.
